Aim: To learn about a saturated solution and how to make crystals
Definition of a solution:
A liquid mixture, when something is dissolved into a liquid (eg: sugar in water)
Definition of saturated:
Having or holding as much as can be absorbed of something (when no more sugar or borax can be dissolved into the water)
In groups of three, you will make three different types of crystals and compare the results.
Ratio; 3 Tablespoons Borax per 1/2 cup water
Materials
1) 1 cup
2) a mixing stick
3) hot water
4) pipe cleaners
5) peg
Process
Step 1: Add warm water to a cup
Step 2: Add 6 scoops of borax into the water
Step 3: Mix it till dissolved
Step 4: Grab 3 pipe cleaners and fold them into a star (fold them like a star make sure there is one that is long)
Step 5: Afterwards grab the star and pin the long part to the peg
Step 6: Add the star to the cup and have the peg holding the star up but make sure it is touching the water
Sugar Crystals
Materials
1) 1 cup
2) a mixing stick
3) a string
4) warm water
5) stick
Process
Step 1: Pour warm water into the cup
Step 2: Add 6 scoops of sugar
Step 3: Mix all the sugar until it is dissolved
Step 4: Grab a string and knot it to a stick (string is tied in the middle)
Step 5: Place the stick from the two on the edge of the cup so that the wire is hanging in the water
Ratio: 4 Tablespoons salt to 1/2 cup water
Materials
1) a cup
2) a mixing stick
3) warm water
4) string
5) stick
Process
